Japanese Drama and Variety Show Kick

Lately I’ve been watching a lot more Japanese variety shows and dramas.

Current favorites

ためしてガッテン

浪花少年探偵団

梅ちゃん先生 (Although this one I haven’t gotten past week 1, so I’m not sure if you can even say it’s my favorite…)

I was watching a Korean drama called ヴァンパイア検事, but reading Japanese quickly is a bit tough for me. I found out Drama Fever has it, so when there’s time, I’m going to watch it.

San Diego Comic-Con 2012

Ahh, Comic-Con. The yearly gathering of nerds and geeks. The place where we can be ourselves. The place where we can dress up and not be thought of as weirdos. One of the few places where people mistakenly think it’s acceptable to not take a daily shower.

This year I had to miss out on Thursday due to work. Didn’t sleep before I headed out by cab to Union Station to take the first train down to San Diego on Friday. My cabbie didn’t know how to get to Union Station either, so I had to give him directions.

Did I mention there were at least 2 men in the women’s restroom stalls sleeping at Union Station? Yeah. Welcome to L.A. >_<;

Friday – Spent most of the time with Laura, Steven, Ume-chan, and my friends, Ardith, Shiz, Popo, and Stephanie exploring Adventure Time at the Children’s Museum there. I won a laptop case.

I now need a new MacBook Pro that will fit the case.

Saturday – Wandered around. Met up with my coworker Penny and her friend. Tried to donate blood, but my body didn’t want to give the stuff up. I did get to walk away with a free t-shirt to go with the lovely hole in my arm. My prize for having to endure a needle digging around in my arm.

Sunday – More wandering around and buying stuff. I also went to the one and only panel I attended during the weekend. There were stinky people there, so after the panel was over I left. It was a panel on drawing/painting in Photoshop.

I didn’t even try to go to Hall H or Ballroom 20. I didn’t try to go see anything. I didn’t want to deal with the lines. I said to myself, wander around and be free!

The Raven

“Quoth the Raven, ‘Nevermore’.”

Saw movie called The Raven tonight with my sister and a mutual friend. It wasn’t bad as the metascore on it would suggest.

Looked up information about Edgar Allan Poe and found out that he married his first cousin when she was 13 and he was 27. Like, ew. Although they never consummated their marriage and their relationship was sibling-like than anything else, it leaves me to wonder if it still falls under pedophilia or not. Different times, I guess.

Still, ew.

However, in the movie, I was left with the impression that his love of his first wife was not entirely platonic, probably because there was a kissing scene with his current love. I’m guessing the producers of the film wanted to ignore the facts of his first marriage considering it is quite a huge taboo in this day and age.

Disneyland Birthday!

It’s pretty normal to want to go to Disneyland on your birthday, especially if you grew up in Southern California. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, but never did…. Until now.

Laura had to go with me, along with Ume. Laura’s friend, Jeannette, came along, too.

Did I tell you I was a bit sick as well? Yeah, that was a bit of a whoops. At least I can now say that I’ve gone to Disneyland on my birthday.

And Toy Story Midway Mania is totally fun. I’m not sure if it’s worthy of the 50 minute wait, but still pretty fun.

Persimmon Smoothie

Another recipe translation blog update! It’s been a while. I haven’t tried this one, but it looks good. I need to get on this before persimmons are out of season.

Persimmon Smoothie

Ingredients (Serves 2)

  • 230g persimmons
  • 100g of fresh pineapple
  • 6 fresh mint leaves
  • 100g ice

Directions

  1. Peel the persimmons and remove the seeds. Cut about 200g of the persimmon into large bite size pieces and the remaining into 5 mm cubes. Cut the pineapple into large bite size pieces.
  2. In a blender, add the large bites size pieces of the persimmon and pineapple, mint, and ice. Blend until smooth.
  3. Serve into small bowls. Garnish with the 5 mm cubes and some chopped mint (get more mint than just 6 leaves as these are like leaves 7 and 8).

Thanksgiving 2011

For this Thanksgiving, I thought of being a little bit more into the cooking and less into the eating. Made 2 things for the Wasserman Thanksgiving party, Japanese-style green beans and Beets and Greens. I also made a tofurky that I didn’t take with me to the party. I didn’t think there were any vegetarians over there, or someone who would appreciate a tofu based food item.
